Béchamel Sauce Recipe: Silky, Creamy

Classic creamy French béchamel (white sauce).

Ingredients
  

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk warmed
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp white pepper
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Instructions
 

  • Melt butter in a saucepan.
  • Whisk in flour; cook 2–3 min.
  • Gradually add warm milk, whisking constantly.
  • Simmer until thickened.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  • Use immediately or store.

Notes

• Warm milk = no lumps
• Fresh nutmeg = magic
• Freezes perfectly
• Try Mornay or herb variation
