Homemade Tomato Sauce Recipe: Rich and Italian-Inspired

Ingredients
  

  • 2 lbs fresh tomatoes chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar optional
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes optional
  • Optional: Fresh basil leaves
  • Suggested Pairings: Red wine pasta

Instructions
 

  • Chop tomatoes; optionally blanch and peel.
  • Sauté onion in olive oil 5–6 min; add garlic for 1 min.
  • Add tomato paste, tomatoes, sugar, salt, pepper, and herbs; taste and adjust.
  • Simmer 25–30 min until thickened.
  • Blend for a smooth sauce or leave chunky.
  • Serve in a white ceramic bowl with basil.

Notes

  • Use ripe tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • Store in fridge for 5 days or freeze for 3 months.
  • Try a creamy or roasted variation.
  • Pair with crusty bread.
