Instructions
Preheat oven to 425°F; prepare a baking sheet or skillet.
Whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
Taste and adjust the dry mixture.
Add buttermilk and butter; form a shaggy dough.
Shape into a round loaf; score a cross on top.
Bake 35–45 min until golden. Serve on a white ceramic platter with butter or stew.
Notes
Avoid overmixing for a tender crumb.
Store at room temperature for 2 days or freeze for 3 months.
