Ingredients
  

  • Cabbage Rolls:
  • 1 large head of green cabbage
  • ¾ lb ground beef
  • ¼ lb Italian sausage
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • Smoky Tomato Sauce:
  • 1 15 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • Optional: Fresh dill parsley, extra tomato sauce
  • Suggested Pairings: Red wine mashed potatoes

Instructions
 

  • Blanch 12 cabbage leaves; cool and dry.
  • Mix beef, sausage, rice, onion, garlic, egg, seasonings; taste and adjust.
  • Roll 2–3 tbsp filling in each leaf; place in a 9x13-inch dish.
  • Simmer sauce ingredients; taste and adjust. Pour half over rolls.
  • Bake at 350°F, covered, for 1 hr.
  • Serve in a white ceramic dish with dill and sauce.

Notes

  • Blanch cabbage carefully to avoid tearing.
  • Store in fridge for 4 days or freeze for 3 months.
  • Try a vegetarian or low-carb variation.
  • Pair with rye bread.
